Submitted by the Portage County Sheriff’s Office
Residents reminded to stay cool, hydrated, and informed during extreme heat.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay has issued a Heat Advisory, which is in effect starting at noon on Friday, June 28. Temperatures are expected to rise into the lower to middle 90s, with a heat index anticipated to reach 100 to 105 degrees. The threat of heat-related illnesses will increase, especially for the elderly and those working outdoors.
“Don’t take this lightly,” warns Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos, Acting Emergency Management Coordinator for Portage County. “Heat related illnesses, such as heat stroke, can be deadly.”
A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Cooling centers have been established in many communities throughout Portage County. Most are accessible to the public Monday through Friday. A few cooling centers are available for use on the weekend, they include Portage County Public Library, Salvation Army, and the Village of Almond Municipal Building. To reduce risk during outdoor work, take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
