STEVENS POINT — Police are trying to clear up misinformation on social media regarding what appears to be false reports of an attempted early Sunday morning assault.
According to police reports, early Sunday morning at approximately 3:37 a.m., law enforcement from the Stevens Point Police Department and the Portage County Sheriff’s office responded to the alley north of the 2600 block of Jefferson Street for reports of an assault.
The initial call alleged that a woman had been assaulted, however, after officers spoke with the woman in question, and her husband, they would find that no assault occurred. The woman stated that she believed she was being followed by a gray 4-door sedan in the alley, only to turn around and leave the area once her husband arrived.
The car reportedly traveled north on Welsby Avenue and then turned west on Algoma Street.
Stevens Point Police Department officials have been aware of social media posts indicating this incident was an attempted sexual assault and/or attempted kidnapping.
“At this time we have no indication that this incident was anything more than a suspicious vehicle/incident call.”
If any person has information on this incident they are asked to call the Stevens Point Police Department at 715-346-1500.
