Hmong American Association of Portage County receives tourism grant

Stevens Point Area Tourism Development Fund distributes grant award to support the Hmong Pre-New Year Celebration to be held in Plover September 8-9, 2018
STEVENS POINT – Hmong American Association of Portage County is the newest grant recipient of the Stevens Point Area Tourism Development Grant Fund. The Hmong Pre-New Year Celebration, which will be held September 8 & 9, 2018 in Plover, has received $3,500 to grow the event.
“This is a great example of an event that showcases the Hmong culture. We are happy to help the event grow in central Wisconsin,” said Sara Brish, executive director of the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“The Hmong community has been part of Portage County for over 30 years,” said Chai Moua, board secretary of the Hmong American Association of Portage County. “This year will be the 27th annual Hmong Pre-New Year celebration. Every year families come from all over Wisconsin and Minnesota to join in the festivities of dance, singing, food, and sports. With the support of the Stevens Point Area Tourism Development Committee, we are excited to enhance our cultural show and competition that will take place on both days. Grants applications can be submitted for costs related to the development of Stevens Point Area visitor attractions and amenities. Grant applications are reviewed and considered by the Tourism Development Committee. Applicable projects include capital and special projects. All grant applications will be reviewed based on tourism and operational criteria. All projects must contribute to the ability to attract visitors and improve overall tourism assets in the Stevens Point Area. The next deadline for applications is September 1, 2018. To be eligible, applicants must be a non-profit or a unit of government. Applicants must also be located within the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau service area, representing all of Portage County, Wisconsin.
The Stevens Point Area Tourism Development Committee distributes a percentage of room tax revenue for the development, continuance, or expansion of visitor attractions and amenities to not-for-profits and units of government. Each project selected will be of the highest quality and benefit tourism within the Stevens Point Area.
The Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is an economic and community development organization whose purpose is to expand Portage County’s economy by attracting conventions, sporting events and leisure tourists to Portage County. Millions of dollars from visitor spending and increased tax revenues are generated to increase commerce, sustain jobs and to create a desirable destination.
