96th Wisconsin State Horseshoe Tournament will be held in Mosinee this weekend
The Little Bull Falls Horseshoe Club will host the 96th Wisconsin Horseshoe State Tournament in Mosinee Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2.
Some of the finest horseshoe pitching in the state will take place over Labor Day weekend at the Mosinee Recreation Center, located at 701 11th St. in Mosinee.
The tournament is set to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, and features six classes of competition.
Ages range from 8 years old to over 80 years young. There are 143 participants from across Wisconsin that will compete in a round-robin format, with classes divided based on skill level.
Admissions for spectators is free, with food and beverages available on site.
Below are notes from each of the six Championship Classes, along with their starting times.
Men’s Championship Class – Lonny Trangsrud from Eau Claire is the defending State Champion. He will be looking to earn his spot back at the top of the ranks, while 19-time State Champion Randy Rein from Mosinee will be going for his 20th State Title. The Men’s Championship Class starts Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m.
Women’s Championship Class – The Women’s Championship Class will see a new champion crowned. Aleena Lepak from Stratford is the six-time defending State Champion, but will not be defending her title this year, as she will be nearing the final stages of her pregnancy. Top-seeded Penny Steinke from Waukesha will look to earn her first State Title. Steinke enters state averaging a 73.2 percent ringer percentage. The Women’s Championship Class starts Sunday at 2 p.m.
Elder’s Championship Class – Jim Bilderback from Birchwood is the defending champ and has qualified for the tournament at an impressive ringer percentage of 69.4 percent. The Elder’s Championship Class starts Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Jr. Boys Championship Class – A new champion will be crowned in this class. Blake Lazaris from Colgate is the top seed and comes into the tournament averaging a ringer percentage of 50.34 percent. The Jr. Boys Championship class starts Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Jr. Girls Championship Class – Brooke Lazaris from Colgate, the sister of Jr. Boys State Title Contender Blake Lazaris, will look to defend her State Title. Brooke carries a ringer percentage of 32.74 percent. The Jr. Girls Championship Class is set for Saturday, Sept 1, at 4 p.m.
The Cadet Championship Class – A new cadet champion will be crowned this year, as last year’s champion has moved up a division. Jedidiah Sowatzke of Wisconsin Rapids is the top seed and comes into the tournament averaging a ringer percentage of 25.87 percent. The Cadet Championship class starts Saturday at 4 p.m.
