UWSP football wins Spud Bowl
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) football team won its first game of the season with a 51-28 victory over Dakota State (1-3) in the 2018 Spud Bowl at Community Stadium at Goerke Field Saturday, Sept. 15.
The Pointers (1-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, then broke open a close game late to pull away for the win.
Following a Dakota State punt, UWSP scored on its first play from scrimmage, as sophomore running back Zach Bosek broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run that gave the Pointers a 7-0 lead with 12:42 to play in the first quarter after the extra-point kick from freshman kicker Victor Ponterio.
Senior tight end Steve Herra caught a 63-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Matt Urmanski just over three minutes later, and sophomore running back ShamaJ Williams added a two-yard touchdown run with 5:49 to go in the first quarter to give the Pointers a 21-0 lead.
Dakota State used a 48-yard touchdown pass and a 43-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to pull within 21-14, while Ponterio kicked a 19-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining in the second quarter to give UWSP a 24-14 lead at halftime.
After sophomore linebacker Collin Hawkins recovered a fumble at the Dakota State 14-yard line on Dakota State’s second play of the third quarter, Urmanski threw a 14-yard touchdown to sophomore running back Jahi Stigall to push UWSP’s lead to 31-14 with 12:22 to go in the third quarter.
Dakota State responded with a nine-yard touchdown pass and a 12-yard yard touchdown pass to close within 31-28 with 2:50 left in the third quarter, while the Pointers answered with a nine-yard touchdown run from Stigall with 11:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 38-28.
Later in the fourth quarter, senior defensive back Omarri Johnson intercepted a Dakota State pass and returned it to the Dakota State 34-yard line, and on the next play, Urmanski connected with freshman wide receiver Alex Adams on a 34-yard touchdown pass to give the Pointers a 44-28 lead with 3:53 left.
Johnson picked off a pass again on the next series and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown to close out UWSP’s 51-28 victory.
The Pointers rushed for 254 yards and three touchdowns on 42 carries in the win, as Bosek finished with 150 yards rushing and one touchdown on 14 carries, Williams had 58 yards rushing and one touchdown on eight carries, and Urmanski rushed for 35 yards on nine carries.
Herra caught seven passes for 145 yards and one touchdown, Adams had three catches for 58 yards and one touchdown, and Stigall had three catches for 45 yards and one touchdown to go along with four carries for 10 yards and one touchdown, while Urmanski completed 15-of-28 passes for 268 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception, as UWSP racked up 522 yards of total offense in the win.
The Pointers have off next weekend, before the open the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season at home against UW-Platteville in the annual Pink Game at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.
