UWSP men’s basketball announces schedule
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s basketball head coach Bob Semling announced the team’s schedule for the 2018-19 season Monday, Sept. 24.
Coming off a trip to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 , the Pointers will again face one of the toughest schedules in the country, with eight games against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
The annual Purple-Gold Game intrasquad scrimmage will be held at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7.
UWSP will tip off the regular season against a NCAA Tournament team from a season ago with a trip to St. Olaf (Minn.) Nov. 13. It will be the third consecutive season the teams meet each other in the season opener, after St. Olaf won 60-45 last season and 63-55 in 2016-17.
The Pointers’ home opener is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, against Buena Vista (Iowa). Last season, UWSP set a program record with 22-made three-pointers in a 93-72 win at Buena Vista. The two-game homestand will continue with a nonconference game against Edgewood at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24.
November ends with another tough road test at reigning NCAA Tournament Quarterfinalist Augustana (Ill.) Nov. 28. The Pointers host UW-Superior Dec. 1, before they travel to take on Hope College (Mich.) Dec. 8, which will be the team’s third consecutive road game against a team that reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
The final home nonconference game of the season is against Ripon Dec. 12, while the Pointers are scheduled to travel to St. Thomas (Minn.) Dec. 15, and then head to California to close out the calendar year. UWSP will play host Cal Lutheran on Dec. 28, and take on Illinois Wesleyan the following day in their final nonconference game.
The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season is set to begin at home against rival UW-Whitewater Jan. 2, while a game at UW-River Falls follows, before a showdown with National Runner-up UW-Oshkosh at Quandt Jan. 9.
Another road game at UW-Eau Claire precedes consecutive home contests against UW-La Crosse (Jan. 16) and UW-Platteville (Jan. 19). The first half of league play ends with a trip to UW-Stout Jan. 23.
The Pointers open the second half of the conference schedule with a home contest against Eau Claire Jan. 26, followed by a road game at La Crosse and a home game against River Falls Feb. 2.
The final stretch of the regular season features trips to Whitewater (Feb. 6) and Oshkosh (Feb. 9), before the final home regular season game against Stout Feb. 13. Defending WIAC Tournament Champion UWSP closes the regular season at reigning WIAC Regular Season Champion Platteville.
Last season, UWSP finished 21-9 overall and was second in the WIAC with an 11-3 record. The Pointers won the WIAC Tournament and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
This season, the Pointers are led by the a group of seniors that include All-WIAC selections in forward Canon O’Heron, guard/forward Nate Dodge and guard/forward Mark Nelson, along with an All-WIAC Defensive Team pick in forward/center Brett Tauber. Guard Ethan Bublitz, a 2017 All-WIAC and All-Defensive Team selection is also set to return after he missed all but one game of his junior season last year.
