STEVENS POINT — The Stevens Point Area Tourism Development Committee awarded a $11,250 check to Friends of Standing Rocks to help kick-start a new outdoor recreation center.
The Behnke-Olson Outdooor Recreation Center, (named after Donn Behnke and Mike Olson), will be built at Standing Rocks Park, and the 2,500 square foot building will contain attached open air pavilion, a 24/7 heated room for pass holders, 24/7 access to bathrooms and water, and a spacious seating area. The building will sit adjacent to the Standing Rocks parking lot.
“This is definitely a wonderful collaboration and really speaks to the philanthropy in this community.” said Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Executive Director Sara Brish.
The Friends of Standing Rocks Park have partnered with Portage County to raise $50,000 of the needed $400,000 to make the building become a reality. The center will serve the needs of runners, cross-country, skiers, bikers, disc golfers, dog park enthusiasts, and much more.
“We’re very appreciative to the visitor’s bureau — they’ve helped us, supported us, and given us all sorts of helpful bits of information over the last 12 months,” said Friends of Standing Rocks Chair Jake Barnes. “We’re well on our way to our fundraising goal, and we’re hoping to exceed it.”
The center is slated to become the main access trail point for outdoor recreation in the Standing Rocks area. Space will be created inside of the existing Standing Rocks Chalet for wintertime tubing, as well.
“The community has given so much to my family, and that’s really a cool honor,” said Mike Olson, whose name will adorn the center.
Donors and contributors include Donn Behnke and Mike Olson, who have over 80 years of coaching and running experience in Portage County through teaching SPASH students. The duo was crucial to the establishment of the 5,000 meter running course at Standing Rocks Park.
