VIDEO: Stevens Point Life: Meet Carlen Dupler

With her foot dangling from a fractured ankle, Carlen Dupler feared life as she knew it was about to make an abrupt turn. For 30 years multiple sclerosis had taken its toll on Carlen’s central nervous system, each year progressing and denying her the mobility she once enjoyed. As a trained nurse, Carlen understood the bumpy road to recovery would be long and frustrating … she was afraid and needed help.
A graduate of SPASH and Midstate Technical College, Carlen worked as an LPN, dental assistant and co-director of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Rudolph. She purchased a horse in 2002, delighted that she could still ride with her debilitating MS. That gentle mare gave her much joy and her love of all things equestrian is reflected in her watercolor paintings displayed throughout her Plover, Wisconsin home.
The insidious progression of MS forced Carlen to rely first on a cane, then a walker, and now the assistance of a power chair. After her fall and 10 excruciating hours in the emergency room, she required months of rehab. Carlen found that help at the Portage County Health Care Center, a county-owned skilled nursing facility and rehabilitative care facility located in Stevens Point. While recovering, she looked out her bedroom window to a yellow pedestrian crossing sign and the walking symbol provided her with inspiration to walk again.
This is Carlen’s story, one of indomitable spirit and the Health Care Center that helped her get back on her feet. Meet Carlen Joy Dupler:
