SPASH’s Tang places fifth at State Tennis
Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) senior Sabrina Tang finished fifth at the WIAA Division 1 Girls Tennis Individual State Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 11-13.
Seeded eighth in the bracket, Tang carried a 25-1 record into state, where she received an opening-round bye, then won 6-0, 6-0 over sophomore Olivia Eckes of Whitefish Bay Thursday, and 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 over ninth-seeded sophomore Maddi Bremel of Madison West Friday morning to advance to the State Quarterfinals Friday afternoon.
There, Tang faced top-ranked freshman Bojana Pozder of Racine Case (40-0), who won 6-2, 6-1 over Tang on her way to capturing the State Title.
Tang followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over fourth-seeded junior Grace Olson of Madison Memorial Saturday morning to advance to the fifth-place match, where she won 6-0, 6-0 over 10th-seeded junior Lauren Landstrom of New Berlin Eisenhower to place fifth and finish with a 30-2 record.
In doubles, SPASH seniors Taylor Konczal and Lillie James lost 7-5, 3-6, (7) in the opening round Thursday to junior Lillie Ripley and senior Hannah Gage of Lake Geneva Badger (20-2) to finish their season with a 23-4 record.
The SPASH doubles team of senior Elizabeth Wentzel and junior Meghan DeBot (23-4) won 6-0, 6-1 in their opening match Thursday afternoon, and followed with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win in the second round Friday morning.
That sent Wentzel and DeBot to play Friday afternoon against the fourth-seeded team of seniors Gabby Majinski and Julia Hintz of New Berlin Eisenhower, who came into the match with a 25-1 record. Wentzel and DeBot won the first set 6-4, and followed with a 6-0 win to advance to the State Quarterfinals Friday afternoon.
There, Wentzel and DeBot lost 6-4, 6-3 to the 12th-seeded team of senior Allyson Verbauwhede and sophomore Kendra Peterson of Manitowoc Lincoln (30-3), who eventually finished third. Needing a win to advance to the fifth-place match, Wentzel and DeBot lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to the ninth-seeded team of junior Bridget Brown and sophomore Kate Wade of Mequon Homestead to have their State Tournament run come to an end.
In the Division 2 doubles bracket, the Pacelli Catholic High School tandem of senior Sophie Schroeder and freshman Ella Schroeder lost in their first match Thursday.
The Schroeder sisters (12-4) won 6-1 in the first set, but seniors Allison Oman and Olivia Braaten of Amery (18-5) won 6-2 in the second set and (3) in the tiebreaker to advance to the next round.
