Adult-only event will celebrate 20 years of the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
STEVENS POINT — On Nov. 2 at 6:00 PM, the Portage County Public Library (PCPL) will host Hogwarts After Hours, giving readers who grew up with the popular Harry Potter series a chance to gather and have fun with Harry Potter-themed games, food, and prizes.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in the U.S. in September 1998,” said Eddie Glade, Public Services Librarian at Portage County Public Library, “so the first generation of young readers to get hooked on the series are adults now. We wanted to give them a chance to celebrate their love of the series.”
Hogwarts at the Library
Recently after a similar PCPL program for teens, many adults indicated they wanted a Harry Potter themed program just for the early generation of fans. Hogwarts After Hours will give adults a chance to have fun playing games like “NEWT Level Trivia” and “Dumbledore’s Army vs. Death Eaters;” eating magical snacks like chocolate frogs and butterbeer; and creating their own “wand.” There will also be prizes for the school House that acquires the most “house points” throughout the evening. Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character from the book series, a popular activity among fans of fantasy and science fiction books and movies.
“There’s a reason this series has stuck with us for 20 years,” said Eddie Glade, Public Services Librarian, “Rowling created a world of magic just beyond our day-to-day world that appeals to everyone whose life sometimes seems humdrum, but she also created memorable characters. The main characters are all 11 to 17 years old, but the adults in the series are not just caricatures. They leap off the page as fully realized people, with hopes and fears of their own.”
