UWSP football upsets 10th-ranked Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) football team (3-5, 2-3) knocked off 10th-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Senior Day at Community Stadium at Goerke Field Saturday, Oct. 27.
The Pointers’ defense recorded four interceptions on the day, including one from sophomore defensive back OJ James at the UWSP 15-yard line with 13 seconds left to seal the 27-21 victory.
Oshkosh (5-3, 3-2) took a 7-0 lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 11:09 to go in the first quarter, while UWSP freshman quarterback Max Herro threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Steve Herra to pull the Pointers within 7-6 with 7:21 remaining in the first quarter after the extra-point kick was no good.
Oshkosh used a five-yard touchdown pass with 10:54 to play in the second quarter to make it 14-6, while sophomore running back ShamaJ Williams had a one-yard touchdown run with 1:40 left in the second quarter, and senior wide receiver Christian Almonte scored on the two-point conversion run, to leave the game tied 14-14 at halftime.
Freshman Victor Ponterio kicked a 48-yard field goal with 12:17 to go in the third quarter to give the Pointers a 17-14 lead, and he added a 22-yard field goal with 14:20 remaining in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 20-14.
Oshkosh looked to answer on the next possession, but UWSP junior safety Sam Shafer intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown to put the Pointers ahead 27-14 with 13:42 left.
Oshkosh followed with a 10-play, 75-yard drive to pull within 27-21 on a five-yard touchdown pass with 11:17 to play, and drove to the UWSP 16-yard line on its next possession, before back-to-back sacks from senior linebacker Ryan Strick and junior defensive tackle Jashawn Witt pushed Oshkosh back to the 29-yard line, where it turned the ball over on downs with 2:15 to go.
Following a UWSP punt, Oshkosh took over at its own 32-yard line with 58 seconds remaining and reached the UWSP 34-yard line, when James intercepted a pass at the 15 to close out the upset.
Herro completed 14-of-20 passes for 164 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, and rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries, while Williams had 42 yards rushing and one touchdown on 13 carries, Almonte caught eight passes for 71 yards, and Herra had four catches for 61 yards and one touchdown.
Senior defensive back Omarri Johnson had two interceptions to go along with five tackles, Strick had 14 tackles and one sack, and senior defensive end Boyd Delebreau finished with seven tackles and two sacks.
UWSP will be on the road next week to play at fourth-ranked UW-Whitewater (7-0, 5-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, before the Pointers play at UW-River Falls (3-5, 2-3) in the regular-season finale at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10.
