YMCA Water Safety Course Offered in Memory of Drowning Victim

For the City Times
STEVENS POINT — Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional, injury-related death worldwide, and about 1 in 5 who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. On May 31, 3-year old Vanessa Elaine Messing tragically drowned in her family’s pool.
Through a generous gift from Vanessa’s family, the Y is offering a free water safety program for children ages 3-5 enrolled in YMCA Child Care. Additional classes open to the community will be offered in 2019.
Y SPLASH curriculum focuses teaching children the importance of how to be safe in and around water. The YMCA also offers a progressive learn to swim program.
