STEVENS POINT — It started with a challenge with a full head of hair on the line.
At 92 years of age, original Stevens Point Evening Lions Club charter member Henry Korger challenged the club to grab five new members for the year. On Nov. 1, the club made good on their challenge and got six new members, and Korger made good on his promise by shaving his head.
“I said ‘okay you guys and gals, if you get five new members in the month of August, I’ll shave my head and my mustache’.” said Korger.
Henry Korger has given his life to the Lions. Many speak of him as a generous person, who has also sponsored three children for their Education in Mexico. Keeping with community events, at the age of 87, Korger had taken his last “Polar Bear” plunge. Suffice to say, Korger has maintained a community-positive spirit for decades. He is one of three charter members, along with Bill Jajewski and Butch Lind.
Korger suffers from Macular Degeneration, yet has done the club newsletter for over 40 years and stayed active in his club and the Portage County area. The Lions Club promotes eye sight preservation.
“That’s very inspiring to our club when you got more new members, and the club is growing.” said Korger.
So would he ever do it again?
“Wifey doesn’t like it when she’s looking at my bald head.” joked Korger.
The club is in it’s 49th year and is excited to celebrate their 50th anniversary in November of next year. For more information o the club, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/StevensPointEveningLions/
