Letter: Concerns over recent departure of County Treasurer
To the Editor:
I was recently was informed that Tom Malison is resigning from the office of County Treasure just before this busiest time of year.
The former treasurer, Stephanie Stokes held this position for 17 years previous with the same problems but always succeeding in finishing the task at hand. Understaffed and no assistance from the county finance department Ms. Stokes continued to complete her duties and often staying late in her office. Due to a personal bias of the Portage county finance department, Patti Drier, Phil Idsvoog and members of the county board a one time late check processing was enough for the wrecking crew to start expelling Stokes.
Stephanie was out if town at the time the check was issued by the Deputy who was in charge in Stephanie’s absence and conveniently someone was actually there from the finance department. The Deputy was then taken into a room and was illegally questioned without representation. Next the information was sent on to the states attorney general’s office with anything that this lynch mob could get out of frightened tax payers and other staff, which was one other person.
The state A.G. did not pursue the issue, no charges were filed. Due to harassment from Patti, Phil, board members and finance department Ms. Stokes was put in a position of the only way to hold on to her integrity among the taxpayers was to resign. Countless taxpayers and townships have expressed how much her assistance, humanity and knowledge is missed.
So with that said, when your tax bills are late, you accrue interest yet receive no help from within the County Treasurers office make sure to contact Patti Drier, Phil Idsvoog, county board and county finance office to express your concerns.
