Christmas Crawl: Whiskey, Beer, and Holiday Cheer
By Taylor J. Hale
STEVENS POINT — A mosaic of Santa hats, Christmas garb, and jolly Wisconsinites will fill downtown bars this Dec. 15, for the first Downtown Stevens Point Christmas Crawl.
Tickets for this pub crawl can be purchased now until the day of the event, and cost $15. The price includes a complimentary Santa hat and festive mug for patrons to kick-start their holiday cheer, and also a grand prize. Proceeds from the event will support the Christmas is for Children program.
Stacey Strupp, Top Hat Bar Manager, helped form the idea for the Crawl, and she is excited to see the city come out to celebrate, and support a noble cause. Strupp observed other urban areas hosting similar pub crawl events, and she wanted local Stevens Point residents to have a chance to partake in the festivities, too.
“I saw online that bigger communities were doing pub crawls, so I thought it would be a good thing for downtown Stevens Point to do,” Strupp said. “There are bar crawls like this in Minneapolis, Madison, and Milwaukee, a lot of places are doing it. I thought that we have the perfect set up here in Stevens Point for a crawl, so we should put on an event.”
Strupp joined with other Main Street bar owners and the Downtown Business Association to put together the Crawl. The idea to partner with Muzzy Broadcasting Christmas is for Children program came about when Strupp consulted her friend, Troy Hojnacki, Owner of Graffiti’s. Strupp believes the partnership with Muzzy will help spread awareness for the event, and help support a program that has assisted the community’s youth for over 30 years.
“Muzzy’s Christmas is for Children program is basically a Toys for Tots, but only for Portage County,” Strupp said.
Over a thousand people have shown interest so far on social media for the event. That total seems to be climbing as the Holiday season closes in. Strupp and other downtown business owners are passionate about the pub crawl. They see it as an opportunity to open up to the community, and show their festive spirit.
“I think it is a good idea to give people a nice reason to come downtown. I wanted to think outside of the box and let people know the bars and businesses downtown are thinking about more than just themselves,” Strupp said.
Participants in the pub crawl also will be entered in a contest to win a grand prize of a one-night stay at the Cobblestone Hotel. Patrons are encouraged to check-in to each venue they visit. Each bar stop will assign a special code, and give visitors another chance to win the grand prize. In short, the more bars you attend, the more chances to win you get.
Show your cheer this Dec. 15, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Main Street in Stevens Point, and celebrate the holiday season at the first Christmas Crawl. Come thirsty and leave happy.
