Ernest J. (Joseph) “Ernie” Schultz

On Friday afternoon, November 23, 2018 a very brave and strong man loved by his family, said some silent prayers, blessed himself as his soul was called to heaven by the lord. His wife and his children were present as well.  Ernie was born August 15, 1941, in the town of Hull to the late Helen Karch and David Schultz Sr. Ernie went to St. Peters Grade School and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1959. The family, as devout Catholics, prayed the rosary every night. As a child Ernie had polio which he overcame by exercising. As a young boy he walked to deliver papers until he could afford a used bicycle, so he could ride to deliver papers. He also washed windows at the Stevens Store downtown, and worked for Gollon’s Bait shop catching minnows.

After high school, Ernie went to Milwaukee and had a job hanging from a swing stage doing tuck pointing on very high building and churches. “Quiet” Ernie dated “Chatter Box” Carol Starry, until the couple married September 21, 1963 at St. Peters Catholic Church. After their marriage the couple settled in Stevens Point, His wife Carol survives. Ernie owned and operated his own masonry business as well as a restaurant for a number of years. He joined the Stevens Point Fire Department in 1964, serving the Stevens Point Community for 31 years retiring in 1995 as a Captain. In his retirement he enjoyed the outdoors in hunting deer, ducks and geese. He loved doing crossword puzzles, working in his yard and walking for exercise.

He also enjoyed Sunday pontoon boat rides with food and beverages included, and watching Jeopardy each day was a must. He also enjoyed the comradery of working with his brothers, father and his son Jeff in construction. In lieu of flowers memorials in Ernie’s name to the Ministry Home Care Hospice Program would be appreciated. Ernie is survived by his wife Carol, his three children; Lori Fisher (Lee Pliska), Jeff (Ann) Schultz and Becky (Todd) Okray, and his three grandchildren Megan Schultz and Alyssa and Lindsey Fisher. Further survived by his three brothers Dave Jr. (Darlene) Schultz of Stevens Point, Paul (Pat) Schultz of Spotsylvania, VA and Chet (Cheryl) Schultz of Wisconsin Rapids, and two sisters Ruthann (Terry) Nelson of Poynette and Alice (Jeff) Johnson of Junction City. Sisters-in-law, Fay Schultz and Barb Schultz both of Stevens Point and Joyce Starry of Sarasota, Florida. Brother-in-law, Ron (Mary) Starry of Appleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brother’s Vic and Joe Schultz, his father and mother-in-law Vern and Jean Starry, two brothers-in-law, Ken Starry and Art Starry. The Pisarski Funeral Home of Stevens Point is honored to be serving the Schultz family. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.pisarskifuneralhome.com
