Obituary: Mary K. Croft

Mary K. Croft, age 99, of Stevens Point, died December 8, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Stevens Point.

Mary was born on August 6, 1919 to the late Sam & Anna (Morphis) Korellis in Hammond, IN. She attended the University of Chicago and earned a Master’s degree in English Literature.

She married Albert J. Croft on December 28, 1946. He preceded her in death on January 8, 1984.

Mrs. Croft was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. A few of her accomplishments while there included being the founder and Director of the Writing Laboratory, Acting Dean of Academic Support Programs, and Acting Associate Dean for the School of Home Economics. Her Writing Lab was written up in Change Magazine as in innovation in the 1970’s.

She was a member of Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church and worked on various committees including United Way of Portage County, Woman’s Fund of Portage County, Portage County Community Foundation Grants Committee, Commission on Aging, Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra Guild, UW-Stevens Point Chancellor’s Advisory Council, Health and Human Services Advisory Board, Plover Library Committee, Ministry Health Care Fund and Grants Committee, Lincoln Center Facilities Committee, Habitat for Humanity Supporter, and she was a member of the League of Women Voters. She was honored for her community service by Ministry Health and by the Women’s Fund.

After retirement, she and a Madison professor co-published a book on writing memoirs. She also was active in the Learning Is Forever (LIFE) retirement program at UWSP.

She is survived by her children: Thomas (Kim) Croft, Cathryn (Dale) Casperson, and Mary Ann Croft.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church. Visitation will also be held on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
