Top-ranked UWSP men’s hockey finishes first half unbeaten

The top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) men’s hockey team won 4-1 over Lawrence University at K.B. Willett Arena Tuesday, Dec. 11, to end the first half of the season with a 13-0-2 record.
The Pointers were on the road last weekend, where they started with a 2-1 win over Concordia (2-9-1) in Mequon Friday, Dec. 7.
Junior Brennen Miller scored 13:29 into the first period on assists from senior B.J. Duffin and senior defenseman Stephan Beauvais to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead, which it remained until Concordia scored a power-play goal at the 8:18 mark of the second period to tie the game at 1-1.
Junior defenseman Drew McLean struck with a goal on an assist from senior TJ Roo at the 18:48 mark of the second period to put UWSP ahead 2-1, while sophomore goalie Connor Ryckman made eight of his 19 saves in the third period to close out the win.
The Pointers traveled to Illinois to take on Lake Forest (5-4-3) Saturday, where Miller scored 11 seconds into the game on assists from junior Austin Kelly and Beauvais to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
Miller scored again at the 7:05 mark of the first period on assists from Kelly and Duffin to make it 2-0, and following a power-play goal for Lake Forest at 15:05 of the period, sophomore Carter Roo scored with 50 seconds left in the first period on assists from TJ Roo and junior defenseman Danny Kiraly to increase the lead to 3-1.
It stayed that way until the third period, when sophomore Zach Zech scored on assists from Carter Roo and McLean at the 17:16 mark, while Lake Forest had a power-play goal with 39 seconds left to provide the final margin in UWSP’s 4-2 win.
Ryckman finished with 18 saves for the Pointers, who closed out the first half of the season at home against Lawrence (4-10) Tuesday evening for Teddy Bear Toss/Skate With the Pointers Night.
Kelly scored 19 seconds into the game on assists from Miller and Duffin as UWSP jumped out to a 1-0 lead, while Zech had a goal on an assist from Kelly at the 13:54 mark of the first period to make it 2-0.
Lawrence scored 2:05 into the second period to pull within 2-1, and it stayed that way until the third period, when sophomore Brandon McReynolds had a power-play goal on an assist from sophomore defenseman Steven Quagliata at the 8:42 mark.
Kiraly added a goal on an assist from McReynolds with 3:50 to go in the third period to cap the scoring on the 4-1 win. Ryckman made two saves in the opening period for the win, while freshman goalie Eli Billing made seven saves over the final two periods.
The Pointers will have off for Christmas break until they return with nonconference games at Concordia (Minn.) at 7 pm. Friday, Jan. 4, and at St. Olaf (Minn.) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5.
