STEVENS POINT — The edifying act of helping creatures in need resonates profoundly in select people. They have an attuned sense for humane respect and awareness. One local Portage County couple showed their love for animals on their wedding day, Dec. 1, when they asked guests to donate money to the Humane Society of Portage County to see them kiss.

Bailey and Cody Zimmerman of Stevens Point raised $150 for the shelter during their big day. The newlyweds are animal lovers and thought donating funds to the Humane Society would be a fantastic kick-off to their new life together.

“We placed a sign explaining that donations would be given to the Humane Society on a table at the wedding,” said Cody Zimmerman in an interview with the Gazette. “And had our DJ announce that if guests wanted to see us kiss, they would have to bring up a cash donation to the head table.”

Zimmerman and his new spouse initially got the idea from their peers.

“Our dear friends, Jenny and Brady Simenson, used a similar format for donations at their wedding, only for Feeding America,” Zimmerman said. “We thought this was a great idea and wanted to pick a cause that meant the most to us. We made the decision about six months before our wedding.”

The new family has a deep veneration for animals. They feel that pets give back to us in a multitude of ways. The couple is especially inclined to feline friendships.

“We feel animal rights are important because animals bring joy to human’s lives and ask for little in return,” Zimmerman said. “They love unconditionally, and we love them right back. They deserve love and happiness just like humans do. We love all animals, but especially cats!”

The couple’s wedding donation project was just the start, they brought the check into the shelter a week after their wedding, but it was merely the beginning. It would give the pair a foundation for their next generous pursuit, again in partnership with the Humane Society.

“After the success of this donation,” Zimmerman said. “Bailey who owns a bridal shop in Waupaca along with her partner, Christine Schultz, have decided to accept donations to the Humane Society of Waupaca County during their prom debut weekend and will be matching any donations made during that time.”

The newlywed’s simple and charming wedding fundraiser has turned into a blossoming program to aid the Humane Society. They see it as an opportunity to help the animals that support us in many unseen ways. Their commitment and philanthropic efforts are inspiring.
