PLOVER — The Fix Is In is a mobile dog and cat clipping service that operates in collaboration with county humane societies.
They load their trucks with essential tools and personnel then travel to where they are needed most to help pet owners. The team will be visiting the Humane Society of Portage County on Jan. 3, Feb. 26 and Feb. 27.
“We work with every county’s Humane Society that we visit,” said Samantha Clouse, the Fix Is In. “We have two units that run now. We have a southern truck that goes to about four shelters, and our northern unit that goes to about eight.”
The transportable spaying and neutering clinic is intended to lighten the burden placed on local shelters, and also assist with animal population control while offering citizens a well-priced means to get their pet fixed.
“Depending on what part of the state you are in, people are saving quite a bit of money,” Clouse said. “It can cost up to $200 or more to fix a pet at some places. We charge $50.”
Since their inception in 2012, they have helped clip over 20,000 cats and dogs. Prices may be considerably lower than their peers, but their aim is not to affect the patronage of area vets.
“We are not trying to take away business from local vets,” Clouse explained. “We want to work with them to be able to assist these people who help these animals. Pets that are not spayed or neutered are at higher risk for disease and cancer. We need to prevent that.”
The Fix Is In is based in Rhinelander and has an affinity for pursuing humane causes. They see fixing animals as a way to circumvent overpopulation and increasing stray numbers.
“A lot of people bring feral animals to the humane society and clip them during the program,”
Clouse said.”We can even bring our trucks to private properties with large cat communities and help manage them.”
Mass spaying and neutering may seem harsh to some, but it’s immensely beneficial to both animal and human populations. Programs like this offer individuals an opening to improve the lives of living creatures.
