STEVENS POINT — The Portage County Park Commission unanimously carried a resolution for the county to purchase 10.42 acres of land at Steinhaugen Park on Jan. 10. It will go in front of the County Board in February.
Funds for the project have already been allocated and approved. The parcel of land, identified as Parcel 032250919, is valued at roughly $100,000. The county is acquiring the land for $50,000, with Steinhaugen, Inc. donating the remaining property value. Capital from the Portage County Land Preservation Fund will be used to transact the purchase.
“We already approved the money to buy the property,” said a project representative. “The reason it had to come back to the commission again was we had to put the finishing touches on the actual purchase agreement, which we have now done.”
Portage County purchased 270 acres of land from Steinhaugen in 2015 to utilize for public hunting and hiking space. The county is now continuing to expand its parks systems for the good of the populace.
