STEVENS POINT — The city of Stevens Point approved the action to enter into a development agreement with TDS Telecom at the Finance Committee meeting on Jan. 14.
The deal would allow for the internet provider to lay a fiber line network down in the area, offering city residents more options and faster speeds in an otherwise cornered market.
Committee members unanimously passed the motion, feeling the company has much to offer the city. The agreement will be in front of council on Jan. 21. Further details are still being hashed out between city officials and TDS representatives.
TDS, a Madison-based company, already has a substantial standing presence in central Wisconsin, extending their services to Mosinee and surrounding areas. They will also offer impressive bandwidth speeds of up to a gigabit. The company will also provide phone and television services to Stevens Point inhabitants. New cable and line networks will primarily be underground to lessen the visual distractions of utility poles.
Many locals are thrilled to see the entrance of another provider in the internet arena. For further developments on this story and more, follow the Portage County Gazette on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pcgazette.
