Testin Release: Senator Testin Supports Tax Relief for Middle Class Families
For the City Times
Surplus Money Should be Used to Give Working People a Boost
MADISON –In 2018, both Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican legislators made middle class tax relief a keystone of their campaigns. This morning, legislators from across the state took the first step toward fulfilling that promise by rolling out a proposal to return a large portion of the state’s $588.5 million surplus to working families in the form of a tax cut.
The proposed tax reductions are targeted to individuals making less than $100,000 and families earning $150,000 or less. The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau projects the median income family filing jointly would see a $310 reduction in net taxes.
“We should all be able to agree that middle class taxpayers deserve a break,” said Senator Testin (R-Stevens Point). “This is the people’s money; let’s give working folks a boost by returning it to them.”
Some politicians have suggested raising the tax burden on farmers and manufacturers in order to fund tax cuts elsewhere, but Sen. Testin believes utilizing the surplus is a better approach.
“Wisconsin’s family farmers have been feeling pressure from low commodity prices for several years now. I don’t think that it’s right to increase their burden when we can use the surplus to help all our working and middle class families.”
Details of the proposal will be finalized in the coming days. If approved, the tax cut would take effect next year.
