WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The annual Wisconsin Rapids Polar Plunge, presented by Trantow Consulting, was held at Anchor Bar & Grill on Feb. 2, raising nearly $100,000 in proceeds for the Special Olympics.
Over 300 jumpers plummeted into the icy water, spectated by well over 1,500 attendees.
“The program here has grown immensely. The first year the event was here it raised about $50,000, last year we raised $93,000,” said Wisconsin Special Olympics Representative Jordan Becker. “The event helps support people with intellectual disabilities and helps create awareness for the Special Olympics in the area.”
For four years now plungers have hit the chilly river water at Anchor Bar & Grill. As the tradition grew, so did the ridiculousness of jumpers’ costumes.
“I always love the fun costumes,” Becker said with a laugh.
Plunger pledge fees, sponsorships and sales made up the proceeds from the event. Plungers paid $75 for the pleasure of diving into the freezing river. The jumpers may seem crazy, but it’s all for a noble cause.
Groups such as the Stevens Point Police Department, Department of Transportation and others participated in the plunge. A panel of judges assigned points to divers, offering awards for the best costumes and jumps.
Becker feels the event, “gives people a chance to see what the big picture is all about.”
