Rep. Katrina Shankland Applauds Governor Evers’ Leadership on Nonpartisan Redistricting

MADISON – On Tuesday, Governor Tony Evers announced a proposal that would have a nonpartisan group draw the state’s maps as oppose to lawmakers. This is in efforts to take politics out of the redistricting process.
In response, Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) released the following statement:
“For years, I’ve been proud to cosponsor nonpartisan redistricting reform legislation with my Democratic colleagues, and I am delighted by Governor Evers’ leadership and commitment to clean government in our state. Ensuring our redistricting process is out of the hands of power-hungry politicians will create more competitive and fair elections. Gerrymandering is harmful to our democracy, and nonpartisan redistricting reform empowers voters to choose their representatives – not the other way around. I am pleased to see Governor Evers act to ensure fair elections and unrig the gerrymandered maps. I hope every legislator will support this reform to truly deliver more power to the people, not the politicians.”
“The people should get to choose their elected officials, not the other way around,” said Gov. Evers in a statement. “By creating a nonpartisan redistricting commission in Wisconsin, we’re making sure that when we’re redrawing district maps in 2021, we’re putting people before politics.”
