STEVENS POINT — Russell Gymnastics in Stevens Point is helping young gymnasts soar to higher skill levels with
their new facilities, located at 5717 E M Copps Dr.
The group’s new 13,500 square-foot space is fitted with top-tier equipment and allows for more students and instructors to be on the floor at one time.
Russell Gymnastics, a staple in the Portage County athletics scene since 2012, moved to the new gymnasium on Jan. 25. Committed students and parents aided the organization throughout the relocation process.
“They had many families help, and they moved it all in 3 days,” said Angie Raab, one of the many dedicated parents involved with Russell Gymnastics.
The gymnast team has steadily grown since its inception, and now boasts more than 90 gymnasts taking part in USA Gymnastics sanctioned competitions. The new building includes elite uneven bars, a vault runway and table, springboards, foam pit, three crash pads, an elite trampoline bed and more.
Gymnasts appreciate the upgraded grounds and are now putting the newly acquired gear to good use. Russell Gymnastics recently sent a team to the Wisconsin State Meet in Waukesha in ‘December to compete in the compulsory 3-5 levels. Several young gymnasts even brought back first place titles.
State meets aren’t the only goal Russell Gymnastics has set their sights on. Nearly 20 young ladies were sent to Florida to compete in the Presidential Classic. The weekend-long event, which started on Feb. 15, drew in almost 4,000 registered athletes from over 27 states and 13 visiting countries. The group even brought home a first place title in the beam category from the renown tournament.
“The experience of being at a large meet and seeing the competition that comes from all around is good for the girls,” explained Raab.
Russell Gymnastics and their graceful team of gymnasts are bringing accolades to the area while simultaneously providing a practice space for amateurs looking to enter the sport. With their new gym established, there is no telling how high this passionate local group of athletes will climb.
