STEVENS POINT — Some Wisconsinites call it cornhole, while others call it bean bag toss. Regardless of the nomenclature used, the classic pastime is returning to SentryWorld this spring.
Note: Dates for the league have changed and updated due to weather conditions.
The 2019 Bean Bag Toss League at the SentryWorld Fieldhouse is kicking off on Mar. 20, and locals are gearing up their two-person teams for the leisurely evenings of drinks and bags. Teams, made from any combination of two men and women, compete in a series of hour-long weekly bag tossing competitions, building their way to the top of the league. Attendees are also able to enjoy a drink from PJ’s during matches.
The program has been running since 2016, and SentryWorld Director of Golf Danny Rainbow is thrilled to see the public enjoying the relaxed sporting events.
“It seems like the central Wisconsin community is beginning to embrace the idea of an organized bean bag toss league,” Rainbow said. “Participants can enjoy food and beverage service from PJ’s restaurant in the Fieldhouse and compete in an upbeat and welcoming environment. During the warmer months, the league is set up near the patio where participants have more of a tailgate experience during our PJ’s live summer music series.”
The league has more than doubled in participant size since its advent in 2016. It is clear that Wisconsinites have an endearing relationship with the game, which originally grew into mainstream popularity in the Midwest area in 1974, following an article published in Popular
Mechanics Magazine that described how to make cornhole boards. Rainbow feels the bean bag toss events provide guests with “unique and memorable experiences.” The league is open to all skill levels, and newcomers are encouraged to join.
Registration is currently open and closes on Mar. 20. The league lasts from Mar. 27 through May 22, with a tournament game during the final week. Tournament champions will receive a free gift card.
