UW-Stevens Point choral students from Wausau and Stevens Point to perform together

For the City Times
STEVENS POINT — Choral students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s main and Wausau campuses will sing together for the first time this month, with concerts at each campus.
Five choirs from the two campuses will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in Michelsen Hall at UW-Stevens Point’s Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. They will also perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the James F. Veninga Theater at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau’s UW Center for Civic Engagement, 625 Stewart Ave., Wausau.
Duane Karna, lecturer and director of chorial activities at UW-Stevens Point, and Timothy Buchholz, associate professor of music at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau, will direct the groups.
The concerts will open with the UW-Stevens Point at Wausau vocal jazz ensembles, which include students from both campuses. Classical choirs will sing during the second half of the performance, which will conclude with three arrangements performed by combined choirs.
The performances will feature a variety of music ranging from jazz arrangements of Rogers and Hart and Bob Dylan to choral classics made famous by the Robert Shaw Chorale. Songs will include “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “This Masquerade,” “My Shepherd Will Supply my Need” and “If Music Be the Food of Love.”
“The merging of our campuses has allowed us to explore ways we can share the great music we make on both campuses with our respective communities,” said Buchholz. “Students will be inspired by performing with their peers. It also should be a treat for music patrons in Stevens Point and Wausau.”
Tickets for the April 17 concert at UW-Stevens Point are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for students and faculty and free for UW-Stevens Point students the day of concert with student ID if not sold out.
