Community for Conner: Hockey fans helping those in need
By Taylor J. Hale
STEVENS POINT — The Stevens Point community is readying to rally for Conner Olszewski, the local 8-year-old boy who doctors diagnosed with medulloblastoma in February of 2018. The Community for Conner fundraiser event, hosted by the Mosey-Leppen Classic (MLC), will be held at the Ice Hawks Arena on April 26, with all proceeds benefiting the Olszewski family.
“Last year my own son underwent emergency heart surgery,” said Korryn Dean, event organizer and member of the MLC committee. “The community put on a benefit for us. At first, it was hard to accept that help, but once I realized how much time I was going to be unpaid off of work to be with him, it was so nice not to have that financial worry. It was like, the community has got my back, and I can worry about my son.”
She added: “I really wanted to pay it forward to someone else.” Dean is also a teacher at Tri-County Schools. The dedicated educator didn’t know the Olszewski family personally but heard the news of Conner’s health conditions through her peers in the school district. “I asked around and talked with other teachers, and that’s how I found out about Conner,” Dean explained.
Conner Olszewski is an avid hockey fan and frequented many Pointer games. The young boy is currently at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, receiving care from some of the nation’s top specialists. With mounting medical bills and travel fees, Dean feels the family could utilize the funds to focus on their son and his health, rather than financial burdens.
“I would like to help raise at least $8,000 for them,” Dean said.
The Olszewski family set up a Gofundme.com page for their son and reached almost $7,000 in the first month of the page’s inception. It is clear that both Dean and the Stevens Point community have a deep reverence for those in need. The UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team will also be in attendance at the event and will be dropping the puck with members of the Olszewski family to start the game.
