The public is invited to attend family-friendly community sculpture project events

STEVENS POINT – The public is invited to attend two upcoming sand carving events for ‘Impressions of Point 2’. The carving events will be held on Thursday, May 30 at the Portage County Public Library, 1001 Main Street, Stevens Point and on Thursday, June 6 at Central Rivers Farmshed, 1220 Briggs Court, Stevens Point. Both events will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

During the sand carving events, the community is invited to create community sculptures for the Stevens Point Sculpture Park. There is no charge to attend and all materials will be provided. The mold created will be used to create an iron piece this summer at the Stevens Point Sculpture Park. The casted piece will then be assembled into a community sculpture and installed in the park.

The new works will debut in the park during the annual Fall into the Park event which will take place on Saturday, September 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Stevens Point Sculpture Park. The public is invited to celebrate the unveiling and other new sculptures. This celebration is free to attend and will have refreshments and music.

The project is under the direction of lead artists Keith Kaziak, Stuart Morris and Mike Godell. The project brings together a diverse group of communities. Last year, 125 were created by people from the Polish Heritage Awareness Society, Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, Hmong Uplift, Point Area Bicycle Service and the Ignite Young Professionals. The piece, known as ‘Impressions of Point’, is on display at the Stevens Point Sculpture Park.

The carved sand molds at the events located at The Portage County Public Library, Farmshed, and Point Area Bicycle Services. will comprise the new work called ‘Impression of Point 2’. ‘Impressions of Point 2’ is a continuation of ‘Impressions of Point’ a community-built sculpture made and directed by the Stevens Point Sculpture Park.

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park received grants from the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin and the Stevens Point Tourism Commission to support the addition of Impressions of Point. The Stevens Point Sculpture Park is an independent all-volunteer run park and is made possible through generous donations and grants, both monetary and in-kind.

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park is a twenty-acre site featuring woodlands, wetland, ponds and prairie. The mission of the Stevens Point Sculpture Park is to provide a welcoming and accessible outdoor venue for environmental arts exhibitions, activities, and educational programs. In addition to the rotating sculpture exhibits, the Stevens Point Sculpture Park will host a variety of art programs and events, including an artist in residency program. The park is open to the public. For more information visit www.stevenspointsculpturepark.org.
