The Albert Getzloff Memorial event is the next stock car racing action for the Central Wisconsin Racing Association (CWRA) Stars to Legends Tour, as presented by Smiley’s Old Time Diner, and it will take place at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover Friday, June 14.
Getzloff was a mainstay as the tire man for CWRA competitors for many years when the circuit was holding race events up to five times a week.
He passed away three years ago, but this event keeps his name in the memory banks of all those that had a chance to meet him.
A “character” to say the least, there always seems to be a story popping up about Albert at a race somewhere, even today. According to CWRA president, Dale P. Danielski, Albert was one of a kind. “He was one of those guys that would make you so mad at him for what he said, but at the same time you were splitting a gut laughing!”
The event Friday at the super fast, 1/3 mile paved Golden Sands track will be one of the biggest of the year, offering over $7,000 in purse pay-off for the CWRA Late Model racers. With the contribution of Mark Smiley from title sponsor Smiley’s Old Time Diner, the purse could swell to over $8,000.
A field of over 30 CWRA Stars is expected to compete, as drivers from three states converge on the Speedway this Friday.
Current point leader and 2018 CWRA Champion, Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids tops the list, but he will face stiff competition from a two-time 2019 Tour winner in Mark Mackesy of Wausau.
Up-and-coming driver Chad Butz of Green Bay is currently third in Tour points and will provide formidable competition as well. The top Rookie competitor this year, Harley Jankowski of Sparta, will also be in the field looking for his first win.
Others that have indicated they will be on hand include 2017 CWRA Champion Frank Nitzke of Berlin, Darek Gress of Neillsville, local favorite Darren Jackson of Wisconsin Rapids, and Fox Valley driver and Norway (Mich.) Speedway Champion Mike Reichenberger of Appleton, along with a host of others.
In addition to the CWRA Touring Stars, several other divisions of racing will be on the night’s card, with qualifying set for 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7:45 p.m.
Golden Sands Speedway is located six miles west of Plover and seven miles east of Wisconsin Rapids on Highway 54.
