South New Hope Church to present story of Transcontinental Railroad

AMHERST JUNCTION — South New Hope Church will present the story of one of most famous railroads in American history.
On Sunday June 23, at 2:00 pm., South New Hope Church will host Professor Brett Barker as he presents “The Epic Story of the Transcontinental Railroad”. This year marks the 150th anniversary of its completion.
This great artery of steel, linking the Pacific coast with the Midwest, remains a remarkable example of engineering skill and human perseverance. In this talk, Prof. Barker will explain the design and conception of the railroad, its shaky beginnings during the Civil War and the five-year struggle to complete it.
From railroad magnate to ordinary worker, the human dimension of the story will be a particular focus. Climb aboard for this stirring 19th-century American drama.
Prof. Barker received his Ph.D. in history from UW-Madison and has taught in Wausau since 2002.
