STEVENS POINT — The Portage County Sheriff’s Department rolled out a new tip reporting process, which includes an app for residents to help local law enforcement.

Dubbed “P3”, users can access the app to send tips to local law enforcement regarding crimes in the area. Sheriff’s department officials hope the embrace of this technology will be an asset to law enforcement and surrounding communities. This works in tandem through the non-profit Portage County Crimestoppers organization.

“It’s very interactive,” said Sheriff Mike Lukas. “Immediately, as soon as a tip comes in through the call center or through P3, designated individuals from each office from Plover, the Stevens Point police, and the Sheriff’s, can get these tips and respond right away.”

Lukas was quick to remind the public that the app, as well as crimestoppers, is not used as a way to report an incident. However, it’s used for tips on existing reported incidents. The app can also be used by local students to report suspicious activity, or incidents involving drug and alcohol use.

According to Lukas, the department receives approximately 75 tips annually. With the new app, they are already received nearly two-dozen. Posters for the new app will be placed in schools, and in various locations across Portage County.

“It took a group effort to get this pulled off, and we’re really excited about the potential increase in tips we can generate for law enforcement.” said Portage County Crimestoppers President Craig Giese.

To download the app, hit the Google Play or iTunes app stores, or simply use your mobile device to scan one of the many P3 posters slated to be placed around the County. (Photo Below)
