The Central Wisconsin Racing Association (CWRA) Stars to Legends Tour produced two new winners in the Albert Getzloff Memorial race at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover Friday, June 21, as veteran Eugene Gregorich Jr. of Amherst Junction, and rookie contender Harley Jankowski of Sparta raced to exciting wins in the two, 30-lap Feature events.

Travis Volm of Mosinee jumped out to an early lead in the first 30-lap Feature, with Jesse Pokszyk of Friendship and Mike Sievers of Wisconsin Rapids battling behind. Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids quickly moved up to challenge those two, as he moved into third place by the fourth lap.

Two quick cautions slowed action, but when racing resumed it was Volm opening up a slight cushion over the field. Weinfurter up to second, and had a battle on his hands from Darek Gress of Neillsville, who was challenging on the outside.

Gress grabbed the spot and set out for Volm, who was still in front. Gregorich, Jr., in his first CWRA start, was moving quickly through the field from his 18th starting spot as a result of his Putch Bentley Trucking, $100 fast time honor, as he grabbed the third spot by the halfway point of the race.

Another slowdown bunched the field, and on the restart it became a three-car battle for the lead. In a nifty three-wide pass, Gregorich, Jr. swooped by both Volm and Gress to take the lead with five laps remaining in the race.

That’s where he would finish, as he took the win by five-car lengths over Volm, Gress, Mark Mackesy of Wausau, Andrew Morrissey of Deerfield and Sievers in one of his best runs to date.

The second 30-lap Getzloff Memorial main saw Monte Gress of Neillsville, from his front row starting position, take the early lead. A quick caution involving three cars made for a complete restart. Another caution found the 27-car field slowed, as Steven Lichtfeld of Pardeeville spun.

Finally on the third try the race went green, with Monte Gress in front. Weinfurter, who was slowed by a flat tire in the first 30 lapper, moved into second to challenge for the lead.

Monte Gress maintained his position leading through the half-way point, but Jankowski appeared to have the hot setup for the race, as he moved up to third from his ninth starting spot. Another caution bunched the field, and with the ensuing, choose your lane, double-file restart, Jankowski found himself next to Monte Gress for the restart.

The two battled side by side for six laps, with neither able to gain an advantage. Jankowski took the point, but one last caution slowing incident found Monte Gress able to sneak inside Jankowski, taking a shot at the lead.

The two again raced side by side, with Jankowski making the outside lane work just a bit better in inching in front of Monte Gress with one lap to go.

It was a lead that Jankowski would hold to the finish, as he scored his first CWRA Feature win, followed by Monte Gress, Weinfurter, Pokszyk, Lichtfeld and another Rookie contender in Mitch Stankowski of Wausau.

A great crowd was on hand for the event to watch the 27 CWRA race cars, the majority of which will be at the next Stars to Legends Tour race at State Park Speedway in Wausau Thursday, June 27, for the Dave Lashua Memorial race.
