STEVENS POINT –The Wisconsin Becoming an Outdoors – Woman (BOW) program is offering an Isle Royale camping and kayaking adventure in Michigan July 19-25.

Open to participants 18 and older with some paddling experience, the workshop will offer information about gear, terminology, basic padding strokes and safety before exploration the Isle Royale National Park. The trip will include padding about three hours a day, with rest breaks, to reach the next camp location. Patient, certified instructors from DC Adventure Center (www.dcadventurecenter.com) will tailor the lessons to fit each participant’s experience.

The first night will be spent at the Bella Vista Hotel in Copper Harbor, Mich., and on the following nights, camp will be set at different locations based on weather and wind. Participants will be able to explore a new part of the island each day including lighthouses, maritime exhibits and coastal and inland habitats.

The workshop is sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources. The registration fee for the paddle adventure of a lifetime includes ACA certified instructors, coastal sea kayaks, paddle gear, tents, trail meals, permits and camping fees, lodging and dinner at the Bella Vista for $1,399.

“BOW provides a safe learning environment where participants can try new activities, build confidence and get outdoors,” said BOW director Peggy Farrell. BOW gives participants the opportunity to learn in the company of other women, providing an atmosphere of camaraderie rather than competition. Research shows adult women prefer this supportive approach that allows them to set personal goals and progress at their own pace.
