Porky’s Groove Machine returns to Riverfront Rendezvous for a funky good time

STEVENS POINT — Food, fireworks, and funk — how else would you celebrate Fourth of July weekend?

For the second straight year, funk band Porky’s Groove Machine returns to the area for Riverfront Rendezvous on Saturday, July 6. The party will start at the North Tent before and after dusk fireworks.

“It’s kind of like an inside joke that everyone’s a part of.” said Vocalist, and Red Ranger, Ilan Blanck.

The overly-energetic and quirky funk band has roots in Wisconsin, as the group started its humble beginnings at musically renown Lawrence University out of Appleton. However, after several iterations of the band, the gang picked up steam after winning a chance to play with Indie-Rock favorite Guster in Indianapolis in late 2015.

“The crowd responded so positively that we thought ‘maybe this means something’, and ever since 2016 we’ve been taking things more seriously.” said Blanck.

They haven’t looked back since.

Following their early success, Porky’s have started touring more frequently over the years. They have released multiple albums and EPs, their latest titled “Hello, My Name Is”, released this year.

Touted as a mix of 70’s-inspired funk with the humor of Frank Zappa, the band is looking to move away from the label of being a funny jam band, and into more serious (but still comical), material.

“We’ve moved away from being a jam band,” said Blanck. “Our shows tend to have less long solos. We’re trying to find a balance between set shows with moments to let things happen, either musically, or with the crowd.”

They first played the area at The Encore at UWSP, and continue to have a blast with the live crowds in Point.

“Every time we come to Stevens Point we just have a great crowd and a great time,” Blanck said. “People are down to get kind of goofy and have a fun time and sing along.”

Porky’s Groove Machine is Dumpsta Boi, Hot Dog Trombone, Squid, Dave the Red Ranger, Shizasta, Bongomaster 3000, and Lerry. You can catch them at the North Tent at Pfiffner Park on July 6 from 7-11PM.
