STEVENS POINT — Fire officials have released an update to the deadly garage fire that claimed the life of a 49-year-old man on Wednesday.

At approximately 6:47 p.m., emergency services and law enforcement responded to a structure fire at 608 Sixth Avenue. The garage was fully engulfed when emergency personnel arrived.

According to Fire Chief Robert Finn, an investigation concluded that the fire was started within the garage. It was determined that the deceased was living in the garage for an extended period of time.

The cause of death of the 49-year-old man has yet to be determined pending autopsy results from the Portage County Medical Examiner’s Office. The name of the victim will not be released at this time.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Foul play is not suspected.
