STEVENS POINT — Faculty and staff members and departmental units at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point were recently recognized for excellence:

Kinslow

• The Department of Geography and Geology received the Friend of Land Records Award from the Wisconsin Land Information Association.  The award is given to an individual or organization that has contributed to the success or advancement of land records modernization in Wisconsin.  The UW-Stevens Point department was one of the first programs to harness the capabilities of advanced geospatial software and data and combine it with the power of spatial awareness. It provided Wisconsin and surrounding states with hundreds of geospatial professionals who understand how to apply geography to advanced software applications to solve complex problems.
• Assistant Professor Lynda Fernholz, education, was named the associate dean of the College of Professional Studies and chair of the School of Education. She joined the faculty in fall 2016 and teaches reading and language arts for teaching. A member of the Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners, she is active with Nicaraguan Literacy Projects. Fernholz also was presented with this year’s statewide Wisconsin Education Association Council Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award. She was nominated by UW-Stevens Point Aspiring Educators, which she co-advises.

• Christine Thomas, dean of the College of Natural Resources, was selected to the Wisconsin Agriculture, Energy, and Natural Resources Policy Advisory Council by Gov. Tony Evers and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. The council works on identifying strategies to protect Wisconsin’s natural resources, strengthen our agricultural industries, and work toward clean energy innovation.
• Assistant Professor Beth Kinslow, health care professions, was presented the 2019 Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association (WATA) Outstanding Educator of the Year award at the annual meeting in Stevens Point in April. The award recognizes a WATA member for outstanding contribution to the education of athletic trainers or athletic training students in Wisconsin. Kinslow is a 2002 graduate of the university’s athletic training program.
• The Building and Grounds unit received a national award from the Professional Grounds Managers Society. The society’s 2018 Green Star Honors award recognizes exceptional grounds maintenance. UW-Stevens Point has colorful gardens and planters and an outdoor classroom, designed to control runoff and erosion while maintaining blooming flowers throughout the seasons. Also, UW-Stevens Point was again recognized as a Tree Campus USA for the ninth year in a row.
• The campus also received a 2018 Outstanding Higher Education Award from the National Recycling Coalition for exceptional recycling programs that serve as a model and resource.
