Updates from the AAA Region 2 Regional Tournament at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point Friday through Tuesday, July 19-23.

Tuesday, July 23

The Stevens Point Sixers beat Marshfield 8-0 in the 5 p.m. game Tuesday, July 23, to advance to the Championship Game of the AAA Region 2 Regional Tournament at 7:30 p.m.  There, Wisconsin Rapids held off a seventh-inning rally from the Sixers to win 2-1 and advance to the AAA State Tournament and end Point’s season at 21-10.

Complete coverage will be in this week’s issue of The Portage County Gazette.

Monday, July 22

The Stevens Point Sixers will have a chance to play for a trip to the State Tournament in the final day of the Regional Tuesday, July 23, while the Plover Black Sox entered Monday with an unbeaten record in the double-elimination tournament, and had their run this season come to a close with a pair of losses.

In a matchup of the last two undefeated teams in the Regional, Wisconsin Rapids came back from a 3-2 deficit to beat Plover 5-4 Monday afternoon.

The Black Sox followed in the game right after against Stevens Point, which was 0-3 against Plover this season. The Sixers rallied from an early 4-0 deficit against the Black Sox and came back to win 11-9 to advance to the final day of the Regional.

In the other games Monday, Marshfield won 3-0 over Merrill in the first game of the day, and then took on Wisconsin Rapids at 7 p.m., where Rapids scored a run in the top of the seventh inning on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2 and send it to extra innings.

There, Marshfield had two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the eighth inning, when it followed with a single, a walk, and a walk-off single to remain alive in the Regional with a 3-2 victory in eight innings.

Point will take on Marshfield at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner to play Rapids in the Regional Championship Game at 7:30 p.m.  Tuesday for a trip to the AAA State Tournament.

Sunday, July 21

After play was wiped out Saturday, July 20, due to storms that hit the area, the Stevens Point Sixers won a pair of games Sunday, July 21, to stay alive in the double-elimination Regional, while Plover remained unbeaten.

In a game that was resumed from Friday night, Wisconsin Rapids won 11-2 over Merrill.

Stevens Point won 6-2 over D.C. Everest in an elimination game Sunday afternoon, while Plover followed with a 7-1 win over Marshfield.

In their second elimination game of the day, the Sixers won 8-2 over Wausau in the final game Sunday.

Plover is scheduled to face Wisconsin Rapids at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, with the loser to play Stevens Point in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Monday.

The winner of the Plover-Rapids game will take on the winner of Merrill and Marshfield at 7:30 p.m. Monday, with the tournament scheduled to wrap up Tuesday, July 23.
