Portage County Fair hit by severe weather

By Taylor J. Hale
Staff Writer

AMHERST – Officials canceled large portions of this year’s Portage County Fair of Amherst due to severe weather.

A few structures on the fairgrounds were reported to have suffered damage from strong winds, though no animals or visitors were hurt.

The annual event, held from July 18-21, saw sunny, hot days on Thursday and Friday, but extreme winds and rain halted the festivities as thunderstorms rolled through the state on Saturday, and into Sunday. Officials canceled the fair on July 20, but the market sale, judging and some other minor activities were still held, according to reports.
