The 2019 Stevens Point Open horseshoe tournament was held at Mead Park in Stevens Point Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21.

A total of 81 participants from throughout Wisconsin pre-registered in 11 classes for the event, which was disrupted by the severe storm that struck Saturday morning.

“The tournament continues to grow and is currently the largest sanctioned horseshoe tournament in the state, aside from the state horseshoe tournament,” said Stevens Point Horseshoe Club president Fred Lane. “We were able to get the Saturday morning session in before the storm blew in and toppled a large tree, which fell over the horseshoe courts.

“Thankfully nobody was injured,” he said. “The storm caused quite a bit of cleanup and three classes had to be cancelled Saturday, but with great help we had an amazing day of pitching on Sunday.”

Due to tournament size, four extra portable horseshoe courts, the same type used at the World Horseshoe Tournament, were put on the tennis courts at Mead to accommodate participants.

Among the winners were Jedidiah Sowatzke and his stepfather James Wicklander, who both went undefeated in their class to capture a Tournament Championship.
