Possible child abduction discounted

STEVENS POINT – An incident documented on social media as a possible child abduction has been discounted.
On Aug. 4 around 8 p.m., Stevens Point officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Illinois Avenue for a report of a suspicious male that tried to enter the driver’s door of a secured vehicle, with a juvenile in the back seat.
The man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance and was asking incoherent questions. He was asked to step away from their vehicle, and he complied.
The vehicle owner sent the photograph out online with the intentions of letting the public know to “be on the lookout for this car and be careful,” as they were not sure why this male approached their vehicle.
The 41-year-old man was identified by police. The man does not have any history of violence and is not a registered sex offender, but does have a history of substance abuse.
After speaking with the owner of the vehicle, police and the vehicle owner agreed that it did not appear to be an attempted child abduction.
