The CWRA Stars to Legends Tour as presented by Smiley’s Old Time Diner will showcase the Marlin Walback Classic stock car race at Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells Saturday, Aug. 10.
Upwards of 25 CWRA stars will be on hand to do battle on the 1/3 mile paved oval, a night that will honor one of Wisconsin’s winningest, and most popular drivers from racing days gone by, Marlin Walbeck.
Walbeck barnstormed the short tracks of Wisconsin on both dirt and paved racing surfaces in the 1960s and early 1970s, winning hundreds of races in the process. Walbeck’s most prolific winning car in that era was a 1957 Chevy, which he sometimes raced six nights a week. With an able crew, and Walbeck at the wheel, the combination was nearly unbeatable at that time.
Another car Walbeck raced to numerous wins with was a 1969 Chevy Chevelle. A replica of that car will be on hand for the event and see track time, with Marlin’s son Kent Walbeck doing the steering.
The car has the same livery as when Walbeck drove it and it will certainly be a hit with fans who attend the evening’s races. Kent Walbeck, through the Utility Contractors Company, will also be title sponsor of the event, adding $1,000 to the CWRA purse pay-off.
All the Stars of the CWRA Tour will be on hand for the race, including current points leader, Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids.
Other top point getters in 2019 who will compete include Mark Mackesy of Wausau, Chad Butz of Green Bay, Harley Jankowski of Sparta, Darek Gress of Neillsville, Travis Volm of Mosinee, Dillon Mackesy of Wausau, Mitch Stankowski of Wausau, Frank Nitzke of Berlin and Nick Roehl of Fond du Lac.
The Tour group will be racing in two 30-lap Feature events, the number 30 representing the number Walbeck used throughout his career.
Besides the CWRA race cars, Mods, Bandits, and Legends cars will be racing, along with two S&S Concrete, Hobbystock Division Feature races.
Time trials for the evening program will begin at 4:30 p.m., with racing starting at 6 p.m.
