GULFPORT, MS – Ty Nelson, a 2017 Stevens Point Area Senior High graduate and native of Stevens Point, serves around the world as a member of naval construction battalion center located in Gulfport, MS – home of the “Seebees.”
Nelson credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in Stevens Point.
“My hometown taught me teamwork and to be kind to everyone you meet,” said Nelson. “You never know what someone else is going through, so you should treat them the way you’d want to be treated.”
For more than 75 years the Atlantic Fleet Seabees have served in all American conflicts. They have also supported humanitarian efforts using their construction skills to help communities around the world. They aid following earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
Nelson is playing an important part in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.
A key element of the Navy the nation needs is tied to the fact that America is a maritime nation; the nation’s prosperity is tied to the ability to operate freely on the world’s oceans.
Nelson is honored to carry on a family tradition of military service.
“Two of my great-grandfathers served; one in the Army and the other in the Navy,” said Nelson. “I only got to know one, and I’d say he played a big part of my choice to join the military.”
Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Nelson is most proud of earning the Seabee Combat Warfare qualification.
“The SCW pin is a staple in the Seabee community and shows you’re dedicated to your job and qualifying in the things you should,” said Nelson.
“Serving in the Navy means serving my country and keeping its people safe. It also means meeting people from all walks of life and learning new cultures and having some cool experiences.”
