Companionship; Gallery Q show offers glimpse of love between humans and pets

For the Gazette
STEVENS POINT – Dogs, cats, and birds join other pets to adorn the walls and pedestals at Gallery Q during its September and October show, “Companionship.”

Doe Eyes by Carmen Duran

Cecil by Jessie Fritsch
Jessie Fritsch conceived the show as a tribute to her late dog, Keisha. “I grew up with animals and have always found comfort in their presence. This exhibit honors the companionship between people and animals and the love they give.” Fritsch will donate 10 percent of her proceeds to the Portage County Humane Society.
Fritsch’s encaustic paintings are specially featured in the exhibition. Encaustics involve applying hot beeswax mixed with pure pigment to a surface, creating brilliantly colored, highly textured work. Ten other Q artists have work in the show. Included are paintings, furniture and wood, fabric and quilts, prints, pottery, and jewelry, all pet-themed.
Several special events run in conjunction with Companionship. Visitors may bring a small photo of their pet to post on a community photo board, and get a free greeting card.
Fritsch is offering workshops on encaustic art during the show. She’s also offering an encaustic pet photo transfer workshop on Oct.12. Mary Therese Murphy offers a silk fusion workshop Sept. 13-14.
Q Gallery is located at 1108 Main St., Stevens Point. For more information, visit qartists.com.
