Kemmeter Column: United Way symbolizes support for community

The United Way of Portage County 2019 Campaign is underway with a goal to raise $3.05 million. The funds will be used to help others in the county, providing money to more than 30 different programs in 15 agencies. Community volunteers reviewed requests submitted by those agencies to determine where the dollars are best used.

The campaign has its roots in a community fund drive in Portage County instituted in 1945 after the end of World War II, one of many such drives held throughout the nation. The funding goal has steadily risen as the number of services and agencies that provide them has increased, yet county residents have always shown their strong support of the program.

United Way of Portage County follows its own goal to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all, realizing that when it reaches out a hand to one, it influences the condition of all. The focus is on education, health and financial stability – the building blocks it has determined for a good quality life.

The campaign maintains the theme “Live United” to call attention to residents coming together to help others in the county, such as families, children, teens, adults, seniors, those with disabilities and those dealing with difficult circumstances. The funds raised by the campaign support vulnerable and aging populations, help children and youth succeed, enhance self-sufficiency, strengthen and support families, and build vital and safe neighborhoods.

The funded programs rely mostly on volunteers who are our neighbors living the county, as they reach out to help where needed in the community. Volunteers organize events, deliver meals, serve as role models, teach skills and provide administrative and emotional support.

Large businesses and their employees traditionally exhibit their generosity through their support to the campaign. Sentry Insurance employees generally contribute more than one-fourth of the goal. But their generosity and that of other employees in large businesses alone won’t reach the goal. The campaign depends upon the assistance of every resident, each making a contribution in their own way to help others.

A donation to the United Way is tax deductible, and many businesses offer payroll deductions, impacting the wallet gradually instead of all at once. United Way does likewise. A donation of $1 per week provides $52 that stays in the community. Those type of donations help tremendously.

One of the reasons people choose to live in Portage County is the sense of community shown by others, particularly the caring aspects. The United Way of Portage County is one way to practice that attribute, providing support for the community. Open your wallet and donate. Invest in the future of your neighbors. Every little bit helps.
