Highlights from the second-ranked Amherst High School football team’s game at defending WIAA Division 6 State Champion Iola-Scandinavia Friday, Oct. 18, and postgame interview with senior wide receiver/defensive back Cyle Zblewski, senior wide receiver/linebacker Ethan Dombrowski and senior running back/linebacker Aidan Elwood.

Amherst (8-0, 6-0) won the Central Wisconsin Conference (CWC)-Large Title outright with a 28-14 win at reigning CWC-Large Champion Iola (2-7, 1-5) Friday night.

Iola took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, but Amherst answered 31 seconds later with a 59-yard touchdown run from junior running back Bryan Groshek to tie the game at 7-7, and Elwood scored on a one-yard touchdown run later in the quarter to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead at halftime.

Elwood added a three-yard touchdown run with 2:05 left in the third quarter to increase the lead to 21-7, but Iola scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass with 8:05 to play in the fourth quarter to close within 21-14.

Following Zblewski’s second interception of the game, Elwood had a one-yard touchdown run with 1:48 to go to close the scoring on the Falcons’ 28-14 win, as they improved to 8-0 overall and finished 6-0 in the CWC-Large.

Elwood rushed for 76 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, and Groshek totaled 100 yards rushing and one touchdown on six carries to lead the Amherst offense.

Ethan Dombrowski finished with 10 tackles and one sack, Zblewski had two interceptions, sophomore Jake Hoffman totaled eight tackles and one interception, and Elwood made seven tackles to lead the Falcons’ defense.

Full coverage will appear in next week’s issue of The Portage County Gazette.
