Local results from opening night of the WIAA high school football playoffs Friday, Oct. 25.
In Level 1 of the Division 5 Playoffs, second-ranked and top-seeded Amherst used a touchdown run from junior running back Bryan Groshek late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead against eighth-seeded Peshtigo (5-5), and then took control in the second quarter at Heartland Farms Field.
Senior quarterback Lincoln Cullen threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Carmelo Aleman, Groshek had a 21-yard touchdown run, and junior lineman Eugene Gregorich blocked a punt that senior lineman Dylan Pacocha recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to give the Falcons (9-0) a 28-0 lead at halftime.
The Falcons went on to a 42-6 win, as Groshek rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries, senior Chris Andersen had three carries for 47 yards and one touchdown, and Cullen completed 7-of-12 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown.
Senior defensive back Cyle Zblewski had two interceptions for the second game in a row, senior linebacker Aidan Elwood had 10 tackles and one sack, and junior linebacker Noah Ostrowski finished with nine tackles to lead the Amherst defense.
In Level 1 of the Division 7 Playoffs, sixth-ranked and second-seeded Almond-Bancroft pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 30-7 win over Athens (5-5) at home Friday night to improve to 10-0 overall.
Also in Division 7, eighth-seeded Rosholt fell 49-34 at fourth-ranked and top-seeded Hilbert (10-0) to have its season come to an end at 4-6.
Hilbert scored on a pair of defensive touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead, while senior running back Reese Anderson had a four-yard touchdown run and caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Isaac Cychosz in the second quarter to bring the Hornets within 21-13.
Hilbert scored with just over two minutes left in the first half to take a 28-13 lead into halftime, and went on to a 49-34 win.
Cychosz completed 22-of-37 passes for 272 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions, as seniors Anderson, Adam Charnecke, Tony Lemke and Dominick Betro each had a touchdown catch for Rosholt.
Amherst will play at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, for a Level 2 matchup against fourth-seeded New Holstein (7-3), which won 28-20 over fifth-seeded Laconia (5-5) Friday night.
Almond-Bancroft will be home again to take on 10th-ranked and third-seeded Gilman (8-2) in Level 2 at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, after Gilman won 24-6 over Pittsville (5-4) in Level 1.
