STEVENS POINT – City leaders recognized former District 10 Alder Mike Phillips for his service to the city, at a Nov. 18 council meeting.
Phillips was unable to attend the meeting due to health issues, but Mayor Mike Wiza gave a briefing on Phillips’ commitment to the city.
“I would not want his service to the city of Stevens Point to go unrecognized, so in recognition of his dedicated public service as alderperson on the City of Stevens Point Common Council, the people of the city of Stevens Point extend their profound appreciation and sincere gratitude to Michael Phillips,” Wiza said.
Phillips officially resigned from his position on Oct. 31. He served on the council from 1995-2004 and again from 2012-19. His departure has left the District 10 seat open.
Moving Forward
Council members unanimously voted to seek an interim replacement alder for District 10 in Phillips’s absence. The interim alder will represent the district until a new alderperson is selected during the coming 2020 April elections.
The chosen individual could still run for alder during the election process.
Candidates must submit at least 20 signatures and all necessary candidacy forms to the city to be eligible to run by Jan. 3.
District 5 Alder Meleesa Johnson proposed the motion to seek an interim alderperson. Wiza added that the council would review applications and likely select a temporary alder this December.
