Tutor Club; SPASH students provide academic support to Bannach School

STEVENS POINT – Two SPASH students offered third and fourth grade students at Bannach School an opportunity to receive additional academic support during after school hours.
The “tutoring club” was the brainchild of SPASH students, Autumn Itzen and Josie Reeve.
The program was held Mondays and Thursdays and ran for three months, with Stacey Itzen as their advisor.
“The main portion of these tutoring sessions was spent working on reading and homework support,” said second grade teacher, Kris Kunkel. “In addition, the students participated in brain breaks and STEM activities.”
Kunkel said that the staff had never been approached to run a club like this, and that it was well received by Bannach students.
“The students loved being part of this club,” Kunkel said. “It benefitted both parents and teachers by giving students the support they needed to complete homework and reading minutes for the night.”
The program ended at 19 weeks, due to Itzen and Reeve’s athletic commitments.
“The girls would have continued but they both are in track and now that season is starting,” explained Kunkel.
